In addition to our housing offering, we provide the following services.
We offer a wide range of opportunities to acquire new skills, especially in horticulture, building maintenance, driving, and key working. Courses are also regularly run on basic computing skills, and leadership training. Courses vary throughout the year.
“I am doing a computer course here at the Lighthouse, before I started doing this course I didn’t know how to use the computers, now I know how to use Word, Excel, and Spread sheets. I am doing this course as part of my staff training, to become a Support Worker, these new skills will help me in my new role.”
“My purpose here is to build and motivate the guys, so that they can rethink their lives, consider employment and get themselves back into work.”
We are essentially a Christian Community offering more than just a place to sleep. We re-build confidence and friendships through a wide range of activities both in Rotherham and further afield.
We have regular overnight trips to Crookstone Barn in the Peak District, often for 2 or 3 days at a time, and we have regular leadership days at the Peveril Centre in Castleton, Derbyshire. We look to have a mission project every year, to serve another project somewhere in the world, and in 2012 a team of staff and residents went all the way to Poiana, Romania to serve a church community in a poor area, with practical help.
Sunday Night Café
The Sunday Night Café was established to offer food, friendship and faith on a Sunday evening to all in need, and is staffed by a large number of local churches on a regular rotation, but with a core number of dedicated volunteers.
We run a 6 a side football team, and a fun cricket team during the summer, made up of residents, staff and volunteers.
In 2012 a group of Lighthouse Residents, Staff and Volunteers spent time working for a local church in Poiana, Romania. During this time they were involved in both construction and restoration jobs applying both their skills and experience gained during their training at the Lighthouse.
Our Social Enterprise Company offers maintenance and renovation services across our properties, and in other similar projects in South Yorkshire. Residents willing to engage in manual labouring, redecoration, and other basic maintenance functions may be able to find a fulfilling role being part of this team as a volunteer. Capable and committed residents may be offered part-time work…and maybe more.
